Personal Budget Tracker

Case Study

Personal Budget Tracker

A full-stack personal finance dashboard built with TypeScript and React, designed to provide complete visibility into income, expenses, savings, and budget goals through an intuitive, data-rich interface. The application features interactive charts for monthly and category-level breakdowns, a transaction management system with tagging, filtering, and full-text search, and a responsive layout optimized for desktop and mobile use. State management follows a clean unidirectional data flow, and the component architecture adheres to atomic design principles for long-term maintainability and testability. Additional capabilities include recurring transaction detection, configurable budget targets with real-time progress indicators, multi-currency support, and CSV export for external reporting and accounting workflows.

The Problem

Personal finance tools occupy two extremes: full accounting software that overwhelms individuals with double-entry bookkeeping and ledger concepts, or simple spreadsheet trackers that offer no analytics layer whatsoever. Neither gives everyday users the clarity they need to understand spending patterns, track progress toward savings goals, and make informed financial decisions. The gap is a data-rich, intuitive dashboard that sits between these extremes.

My Approach

Built a full-stack React + TypeScript application following atomic design principles and strict unidirectional data flow to ensure long-term maintainability. The component architecture separates concerns at the atomic, molecule, and organism levels, making each piece independently testable. Interactive charts — monthly income/expense trends, category-level breakdowns, and cumulative savings curves — were built with a modern charting library to give users immediate visual comprehension of their financial position. A transaction management system handles tagging, multi-criteria filtering, and full-text search across the full history. Additional capabilities include: - Recurring transaction detection with smart suggestions - Configurable budget targets with real-time progress indicators - Multi-currency support for international users - CSV export for compatibility with external accounting workflows

Results & Impact

Delivered a production-grade personal finance dashboard deployed to Vercel at budgettrackerprod.vercel.app. The application gives users complete visibility into their income, expenses, and savings trajectory through an intuitive interface optimized for both desktop and mobile. CSV export enables power users to bring their data into spreadsheets or accounting tools without lock-in.
